OUR STORY

The Alkebulan Alumni Association exists to unite past program participants and actively engage them in supporting and shaping today’s Alkebulan youth programs. Our mission is to cultivate the talents, skills, and potential of young people, helping them grow into purpose-driven leaders grounded in strong values and community connections.

For nearly 50 years, the Alkebulan Youth Program of the Shrine of the Black Madonna of the Pan African Orthodox Christian Church, has created a nurturing environment that supports the whole child: mind, body, and spirit. Rooted in rich cultural traditions and a legacy of community development, Alkebulan has consistently provided meaningful experiences that inspire personal growth and lifelong learning.

Through the Alumni Association’s continued support, we strengthen this work by offering youth transformative opportunities throughout the year. Participants engage in academic enrichment, spiritual awareness, group-centered activities, field trips, social development, and much more. Within this supportive community, young people are encouraged to discover their purpose and confidently step into their gifts.

Life at Camp

At Camp Alkebulan, we provide children with a rich variety of engaging activities that keep their minds stimulated throughout the summer while expanding their horizons beyond their everyday experiences. Our program offers academic enrichment, cultural arts, athletics, horseback riding, African-centered spiritual exploration, weekly field trips, swimming, gardening, and so much more. Each experience is intentionally designed to inspire curiosity, build confidence, and nurture the whole child—mind, body, and spirit.

“That was the best camp I have ever been to. The food was good and I made so many new friends. I can't wait until next year.”

“What I loved about this camp is that it was an overnight camp. I had never been to an overnight camp before. We did so many activities and I even got to ride a horse!”

“The staff at camp was so nice and cool. I learned so many things about Black culture that I didn't know. I hope my mom and dad put me in camp every year.”
